International Adoption Funding Tips

International adoption funding is one of the biggest issues facing parents considering building their families through international adoption. You long for a child, but how are you going to pay for that costly adoption?

The Good News

While that adoption may cost $18,000 overall, the good news is you won't have to come up with that whole amount all at once. Instead, you will be paying it piecemeal over a year and a half or more, depending on the country from which you plan to adopt. That means you can pay for your international adoption expenses as you go.

So an international adoption is still possible, even if you aren't wealthy or have a huge income. My husband is a carpenter, I'm a stay-at-home mom, and we managed to pay for an international adoption without going into debt. You can as well.

But you'll still need to plan your international adoption funding strategy. Here are some tips.

Gather Reinforcements

Once you commit to your international adoption, let friends and family know of your plans, and ask for volunteers to help you with your fundraising efforts. The more help you have, the easier it will be to achieve your international adoption funding goal.

Plan Your Funding Strategy

Your expenses will likely include a home study, agency fees, international fees, paperwork expenses and physical exams, but again, they won't come all at once.

On your calendar, mark the amounts that you will owe for each of these and the estimated day they will be due. Then plan your fundraisers accordingly. For example, if you plan on having your homestudy done a month from now, you could organize a yard sale two weeks before that date to help pay your homestudy expenses.

Possible Fundraisers

There are all kinds of fundraising out there to help you with your international adoption funding. Here are some ideas.

The Viral Dollar Pledge

I know someone who raised hundreds of dollars doing this. Start an adoption blog (you can start one for free by clicking here). Once you have your blog, open an account with Pay Pal and then add a donation button to your blog.

Then go viral. Send out an email to everyone you know letting them know you are pursuing an international adoption. If you have a picture of the child you plan on adopting, include that in your email. Ask everyone to pledge a dollar or more and then ask them to forward your email to everyone they know.

Many people are happy to help out an orphan in need, and a dollar isn't much to ask, but those dollars add up before you know it and can really help with your international adoption funding.

Kids' Fun Night

Round up some volunteers to help you and then offer to hold a kids fun night at your home or church where parents can drop off their children for a few hours of fun. Ask parents for a donation to go toward your international adoption funding when they drop off their children.

Serve hot dogs or pizza, soda pop and cookies. Organize fun games and watch a fun movie.

Fundraising Dinner

Plan a spaghetti dinner at your church to help provide funding. Have flyers printed up and post them around your neighborhood. You can cut down on costs by approaching the manager of nearby supermarkets and asking for a donation of the food expenses. At the dinner, you can talk about your child's country.

Other Helpful Sources

Ask many couples why they don't adopt, and they'll say finances are what are holding them back. But it doesn't have to be that way. My husband and I had a limited income, yet we were able to adopt three children, including one child from Guatemala without going into debt. You can too. Here's how.
