International Adoption Fee

The international adoption fee is most likely to be the highest part of your adoption expenses, sometimes coming to $10,000 per child or even more. So why is this fee so high?

Many overseas expenses contribute to the cost of your international adoption fee, including the following:

Foster Care/Orphanage Expenses

Even if you are in the process of an international infant adoption, you likely will not be able to bring your child home until she is at least seven months of age. Someone will have to take care of her during that time, and a large part of your international fees will go for either foster care or to help pay orphanage expenses.

Attorney Expenses

In some countries, an attorney will be hired to bring your case before the proper governmental agency and to represent you. Your fee will cover his expenses.

Bureaucracy Fees

Should your adoption be processed through a governmental agency, many hours will be devoted to reading your dossier and assigning a child to you. Part of your international adoption fee will go to cover those expenses.

Big Money

Accuse me of being cynical, but I can't help but think that adoption fees are driven - at least in part - by our willingness and ability to pay them. True, ten thousand dollars or more is a lot of money, but most of us, when sufficiently motivated, are able to pay them. If we weren't, I don't think the fees would be that high.

We want to think that all people involved in the adoption industry are honest and pursue such work for noble reasons. But let's face it; ten thousand dollars or more - a big enough expense to those of us living in the United States - is a king's ransom in a third world country. One can't help but think such a large sum has the ability to tempt and corrupt.

Unfortunately, it's part of the price you must pay to adopt internationally.
