Single Parent Adoption

Single parent adoption is more possible today than it has ever been, with more countries open to single parents adopting, especially single women.

While at one time, single parent adoption may have been limited to older children or children with special needs, a single parent can now adopt any type of child, from an infant to an older child to a special needs child.

Exceptional Income Not Required

True, celebrities such as Madonna and Angelina Jolie adopted as single parents, but you don't need to earn a fabulous income to prove you're eligible for a single parent adoption. As long as you can adequately support yourself and a child, you can adopt.

No Longer a Stigma

Plus, Lee Varon, author of Adopting on Your Own: The Complete Guide to Adoption for Single Parents points out that with so many children being raised by single parents these days, the child of a single parent adoption won't feel as stigmatized as he might have even twenty years ago.

Thinking of Pursuing a Single Parent Adoption?

Just like anyone else considering adoption, be sure and examine your own motives for pursuing an adoption. Do you want to share your life with a child and feel you have a lot to offer, or are you thinking about adoption only because you are lonely? Never look to a child to meet your emotional needs because in the end, both you and your child will be horribly frustrated. You are there to meet your child's emotional needs, not the other way around.

my little angel Also, try to envision what it would be like to have a child in your life twenty four seven. No child is a perfect angel, and while you may have fantasies of what your child will be like, be aware that he'll not likely meet your expectations. He or she will be very, very human.

Flexibility Required

Does chaos drive you nuts? Introduce a child into your life, and your world will become crazy at times. If you're flexible and don't mind that, you'll do fine.

Think about how a child will affect your lifestyle - and trust me, he will change your life dramatically. Rick and I miss out on a lot of social events these days because of our three children. We realize this is a season in our lives, and we will have a social life again someday, but it can be a struggle sometimes. Are you willing to give up the social scene - at least on a part-time basis - for awhile?

Must Be Stable

How secure are your job and your finances? Because you won't have a partner to fall back on when the hard times come, you need to be especially careful with your finances and make certain you have financial security.

And if the bottom falls out, will you have a support network to help out? Will you have access to child care? Is your family supportive of your adoption and willing to help out when needed?

Make certain you address all of these issues before pursuing adoption as a single parent.
