Raising Children with ADHD

Raising children with ADHD - also known as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder - is not nearly as hard as you may think, especially if you stay away from prescription medications. My son, now eleven, has ADHD, and while raising him has been challenging at times, it is more a change of perspective on my part that has been crucial to successful parenting.

These children are bright, inquisitive, impatient and yes, active. So why has our society chosen to demonize these traits? If you adopt one of these wonderful children, please consider working with your child rather than forcing him to be something he's not.

Raising Children with ADHD
Stay Away from the Drugs

Think long and hard before putting your child on prescription medications. There may not be an epidemic of children developing ADHD, but there is certainly a growing epidemic of children being diagnosed with ADHD. According to the National Center for Disease Control the number of children between the ages of 3 and 17 diagnosed with ADHD have reached a record number of 5.3 million children. That's an increase of 21.8 percent in just four short years, according to a recent report.

Raising Children with ADHD and
The Pressure to Drug

For many of these children, it's not so much an issue of having ADHD, but instead an inability to sit still for long periods of time, a common trait among many boys. Schools tend to pressure parents into prescribing drugs for children with ADHD to make them easier to teach, but as a parent, be aware that these drugs are amphetamines.

Taken on a regular basis, amphetamines and other psychotropic drugs can permanently alter the make up of a child's brain. It's not wise for adults to take these drugs on a regular basis, so why in the world would we give these drugs to children whose brains are still developing? It's a recipe for disaster. Not only are these drugs dangerous, they are also highly addictive and can lead to the abuse of other drugs. Children and teens who abuse drugs during the formative years never mature emotionally.

Dangerous Side Effects

Some physicians are now arguing that these drugs actually bring on the very symptoms they are supposed to be suppressing, including hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, leading to an increased need for these drugs and creating a vicious cycle of drug addiction.

Other dangerous side effects of using these stimulants include irritability, anger, agitation, a hyped-up sex drive, hostility and manic behavior. Children on these drugs can also develop psychotic behavior. Eric Harris was on a psychotropic drug when he and Dylan Klebold killed 12 classmates and a teacher at Columbine. There have been numerous cases of children on these mind-altering drugs committing violent acts.
Dietary supplements such as krill oil work far more effectively with less side effects than drugs such as Ritalin or Concerta.

Safer, Gentler Ways of Dealing with ADHD

So before you resort to drugs, please think of less harmful ways to deal with your child's hyperactivity. Consider educating your child at home. It's not nearly as difficult as you may think, and you can adapt your curriculum and times of teaching to your child's personality rather than forcing him to adapt to a school schedule. Because I am teaching my son at home, his hyperactivity has never been a problem. I have learned to teach him in short, 15-minute segments throughout the day, allowing him plenty of time to process what he has learned.

An excellent supplement to give your active child is krill oil. The omega-3 fat in krill oil improves the symptoms of ADHD without any side effects and far more effectively than drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta.

Also make sure you child gets plenty of rest. My son still needs about 10 hours of sleep a night. Provide your child with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid processed foods and chemical-laden products. These can trigger food allergies, causing symptoms very similar to ADHD.

By taking these safer, gentler steps, raising children with ADHD can be both delightful and rewarding.

How to Become a Positive Parent

Teach your children that good behavior will lead to positive benefits. There are a number of ways to do this, including using a parenting program that allows children to earn tickets for demonstrating good behaviors and positive values.

Learn to modify your child's behavior by watching your language. By stating commands in the positive rather than the negative, you can teach your children in subtle, yet powerful ways.

You can practice better discipline methods by teaching your children that it is their behavior, rather than your anger, that has both positive and negative outcomes, eliminating your anger and frustration in the process.

Peace at Home

There are excellent programs out there to help you with this goal. The important thing is to take a positive step toward positive reinforcement parenting. Your home will become more harmonious, and you'll all be happier and live in a more peaceful environment.
