Adopting from Kazakhstan

Adopting from Kazakhstan is becoming more popular as the children are generally well-cared for and the wait is shorter than other programs. Kazakhstan is a fairly large country (a little less than four times the size of Texas) and is nestled between Russia and China. To see a map of Kazakhstan, click here.

Why Are the Children Available for Adoption?

The people of Kazakhstan faced harsh financial struggles when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. Parents who were unable to care for their children either abandoned them or put them in orphanages. According to the U.S. State Department, 380 American families were adopting from Kazakhstan in 2008.

What Are Kazakh Children Like?

Travel Involved

When adopting from Kazakhstan, you have to make two trips. Your first trip is about three and a half weeks in length. This is where you will meet and choose your child. You will be meeting with your child on a daily basis for two weeks. About five to ten days after that, you have a court hearing, and then you return home. About 30 days later you will make a second, one-week trip to Kazakhstan to pick up your child, obtain a Visa and return home.
