The Madonna Adoption How it Impacts International Adoption
The Madonna adoption shows that for good and bad, celebrities have an impact on our lives.
They starve themselves, and we all worry about our weight.
They go into rehab, and we watch the entertainment news in fascination.
And then they adopt, impacting our lives in a far more powerful way.
Like it or not, celebrities actions like Madonna's adopting a child from Malawi impact the way we think about international adoption.
It Opens the Door of Possibilities
The Madonna adoption and other adoptions made by celebrities make us aware of the possibility of adoption.
I'll never forget the time I read an article by Eddie Albert about his international adoption experience.
He and his wife had a son - Edward Albert, Jr. - but wanted another child.
Eddie went to an orphanage in Mexico and met a little girl named Maria who ate his lunch and stole his heart.
Albert loved that little girl devotedly until the day he died.
Adopted daughter Maria eventually became his manager.
Until I read of Albert's experience, it never even occurred to me that you could adopt - and love - a little girl that did not come from your own body.
The Madonna adoption and adoptions made by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt do the same thing today, showing today's young people that adoption is a way to build your family while providing opportunities for orphans.
It Exposes the Problems of International Adoption
When adoption requirements are waived for celebrities - such as they were for Madonna when she adopted her son David Banda in 2006, it revealed Malawi's hazy adoption laws.
By focusing a spotlight on the Madonna adoption problem, it can hopefully bring about change for the better.
It Shows that Talent Isn't Necessarily Genetic
Celebrity adoptions such as the Madonna adoption show us one's environment has just as much impact on what we become as our genes.
Melissa Gilbert, daughter of two actors, was adopted, and so was her brother Jonathan Gilbert.
Melissa played Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie, while Jonathan played Little House character Willie Oleson.
Pairs figure skaters and adopted - but not biologically related - brother and sister Kitty and Peter Carruthers were U.S. Figure Skating champions and 1984 Olympic silver medalists.
Coincidentally, Kitty also once dated Olympic figure skating champion Scott Hamilton, who was also adopted.
A Madonna Adoption Shows that Even Celebrities Will
Make Sacrifices for the Good of the Child
While starring in the Soap Opera Ryan's Hope, actress Kate Mulgrew became pregnant and as a single woman, gave up her baby for adoption.
It Shows that Birth Mothers Give up a Baby, But Never Forget
When celebrities such as Rosanne Barr and Joni Mitchell came forward and revealed they had given up babies for adoption, we got a glimpse into the pain they suffered, and the joy they experienced reuniting with their children many years later.
