Help For Those Bumps on the Way

International adoption assistance is something we all need from time to time. Once you start on your adoption journey, you'll inevitably find yourself encountering a bump or two along the road, either with a document your agency requires, or questions you just can't find the answers to. When that happens, where can you turn?

Here are five tips that can help you the next time you need international adoption assistance. angel with pumpkin

Contact Your Adoption Agency

Because your questions and your paperwork will likely be specific to the needs of your particular agency and country, you should turn to your agency first with any questions you may have. It's your case worker's job to help you with any questions or problems you have with your case, so don't hesitate to ask. And even if she's overwhelmed and can't call you back that same day, you can also check the FAQ section of your agency's website. Your answer may be there.

International Adoption Forums

Some agencies have private, online forums made up of members either in the process of adopting or who have already brought their precious child home. A wealth of international adoption assistance can be found in these forums, so join in.

Your Local Congressman

During my adoption journey with my daughter, I was having trouble getting a state agency to comply in providing me with a letter my adoption agency required. I mentioned this to a man in our church. "Contact your senator," he advised me. I did, and it worked wonders. We got our letter in the exact form we needed in a matter of days. Your senator is dependent on your vote to keep him (or her) in office, so when you take the time to write or call, you'll get attention and action within a matter of days. This is especially helpful if you're facing a roadblock with a state agency.

Find a Family in Your Community

As soon as you start your international adoption journey, you'll be amazed at the number of people you run across who have also adopted internationally. Don't be shy about contacting these people and asking advice. They've been there, and they know what you're going through. They will be a great source of both international adoption assistance and encouragement.

Go Online

Go to Google and type in "International Adoption". You'll likely find all sorts of forums and support groups focusing on international adoption. In addition, there are dozens of Yahoo Groups out there that focus on adopting internationally. Find a group that fits and join in.
