Employee Benefits for Adoption

Employee benefits for adoption are increasingly becoming available in more and more companies, so it's definitely worth your while to check and see if your company offers such benefits.

A Growing Trend

In 1990 one survey revealed that only 12 percent of employers who were surveyed offered some type of adoption benefit. But that number climbed to 23 percent in 1995. By the year 2004, 39 percent of employers were offering employee benefits for adoption, with 936 major U.S. employers offering an average maximum reimbursement of $3,879. These days, the odds are pretty good that you are working for a company that provides adoption benefits.

So why would a company offer employee benefits for adoption? These companies have found that by offering these benefits, they find that productivity is maintained, it provides a positive public image, and they retain good employees that way.

Types of Benefits Available

The types of benefits available vary from company to company, but typically include the following:

Information and Advice

These benefits include adoption support groups and organizations, referrals to licensed adoption agencies, and free advice from an adoption specialist who will answer your questions about the adoption process and help you with any special needs you may have.

Financial Adoption Aid

These benefits come in different ways. Some adoption benefits will include a partial reimbursement for expenses, while other employers will pay certain fees that are related to an adoption. Still other employers will pay a lump sum typically between $1,000 and $15,000. Usually employers pay these benefits either after a child has been placed in the home or the adoption has been finalized.

Parental Leave

By Federal law, parents are allowed up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually to care for a child, and that leave can be taken all at once, but some employers also offer paid leave, while other employers will allow you to combine your vacation time with the required 12 weeks for even more time to bond with your newly adopted child.
