Adoption Stories to Encourage

Most adoption stories are told from the parent's perspective. It was truly refreshing, therefore, when I stumbled across Lucky Girl: A Memoir by Mei-Ling Hopgood.

mother and daughter Mei-Ling was adopted from Taiwan as an infant and grew up in Michigan. She was the eldest of three Asian children adopted by Rollie and Chris Hopgood. She loved her adopted parents, had a normal and happy childhood and was living in Detroit after graduating from college when she got back into touch with a nun who cared for her while her adoption was being facilitated.

Eventually, Mei-Ling gets back in touch with her biological family and writes about reuniting with biological parents, sisters and a brother she never had. Her biological family has mannerisms she finds strange as well as characteristics she can identify with. In meeting with her family, she comes to learn more about herself.

She writes about her frustration in never truly getting to know her mother and how, through visits with her biological family, Mei-Ling learns the dark secrets of her biological family and the reason she was given up for adoption. She also realizes - and accepts - that she will never have the close relationship with her biological mother that she does with her adoptive mother.

Lucky Girl is one of those adoption stories you will find both eye-opening and encouraging.
