Adopted Child Syndrome

Adopted child syndrome - ever heard of it? Basically, it's a controversial label used to explain hurtful and destructive behaviors in adopted children such as violence, defiant behavior, lying, stealing and reactive attachment disorder.

So as a prospective parent of an adopted child or children, how concerned should you be about adopted child syndrome, and what risk do you have of bringing home a child with destructive behaviors? grumpy girl

Adopted Child Syndrome
Disputed Validity

First of all, realize that those in the professional community have not recognized adopted child syndrome as a valid disorder. And while some children may exhibit reactive attachment disorder (and occasionally act out), you and your child will adjust over time and do quite well.

So while you're not likely to have a problem with adopted child syndrome, how can you make sure that you and your child will bond quickly and smoothly?

Bonding With Your Toddler or Infant

If you are bringing home an infant or toddler, make sure that only you and your husband are the ones holding your child. Also, the two of you should be the only ones who feed your child.

By meeting the needs of your child in such a visible way, you show your child or children that you are there for them. They learn to trust you, and a bond will develop.

Older Child Adoption

You will also most likely be able to bond with an older child you adopt as well. Just remember that an older child adoption will take just as much work and time to adjust as an infant or toddler. It will likely take a full year or more before you have a strong relationship.

Work on your relationship by spending time together doing activities you enjoy. Just like any other relationship, the bonding between an adopted child and his new parents won't be overnight. It takes time and work.

But it can be done.
